History of Membership
Originally, the Speakeasy was invite only. To be a member, you had to receive an invite from the existing members. Behind the scenes, we voted on who we'd let in, only inviting someone after we had unanimous agreement. While this was great at ensuring the members all vibed with one another, it limited our growth to those people who we all agreed to admit.
In June, 2028, we decided to loosen these restrictions, but we wanted to do so in a way that still allowed us to maintain the close-knit, familial vibe that we'd worked so hard to cultivate. We also wanted to do our best to boot spammers, scammers, and trolls into the sun before they got an account.
Membership Process
Joining the Speakeasy is a straightforward process, requiring only a little bit of your time.
- Submit an Application on the Fedi Instance - The first step is to submit an application. This starts the process of vibe checking you for membership! Make sure you enter a good email address and remember your username. We will email you the questionnaire, so once you apply... expect that message from us within a day or two.
- Complete the Questionnaire - Assuming you don't give off spammer or troll vibes, we will email you the questionnaire. The best way to help us decide whether you vibe is to know more about you... and the questionnaire helps us do that! Because we want to respect your privacy (for real, not like corpos do) we only ask you to answer things that you're comfortable answering, and we don't ask you to do weird, creepy stuff like provide ID or blood or whatever. You don't have to answer anything you're not comfortable answering, but we do need at least something to work with!
- Answer Any Follow-Up Questions - Occasionally, we might have follow-up questions for you. Maybe you forgot to answer a question, maybe an account you listed doesn't show up, or maybe we need a little bit more to verify that you're legit.
- Receive an Answer - The Investigatrix will contact you when she's done with her review. There are three possible outcomes for an application:
First, you can be Approved, which means you passed the vibe check! We'll approve your application, send you your welcome pack, and you should be able to log into your account pretty much immediately.
Second, you can be put on Hold Pending Information, which means we have some questions or concerns we want to clear up. This is not a no, this is just... pending information. If you choose not to answer or do not respond, we'll have to decide on what we know.
Third, we may Decline your application. The reasons we decline applications vary, but some obvious ones would be evidence that you are a troll, that you're not at least 18, or you have done things or said things that violate our rules.
Membership FAQ
- Do I really need to be 18? - Yes. Our server is meant for adults (even if Elle acts like a angsty teen sometimes) so 18+ only. Sorries!
- Is there a way to speed the application up? - Sort of! If you regularly interact with the Speakeasers and we know you, we don't need to do as much review. If you give us good answers and good places to see who you are, that speeds things up too.
- Can I have other Fedi accounts too? - Of course! We'll only worry if you seem to create and delete like, tons of accounts. It isn't necessarily that we think you're sus, we just put a lot of work into vibe checks and we don't want to spend the silverware if you're only staying for an hour.
- I'm a sex worker. Am I welcome here? - Yes. Just remember that our rules on advertising and CWs apply to all of us!
- I got banned from OtherServer. Should I tell you in my application? - We'd appreciate it. It is always better to find out from our applicants. Bans aren't necessarily dispositive.
- I used to be a shitty person but I've changed. Will you give me a chance? - Possibly. We believe that people can change. Whether we admit you to the Speakeasy depends on how long you've been not shitty, how ick your shitty was, and how sincere your change to not shitty seems.
- My friends are mostly on instances you defederated. Can you-- - This is definitely not the place for you.
- I'm a TERF, but... - Fuck off.
- I think the LGBTQIA+ ppl are fine but some restrictions... - Also fuck off.
- I got rejected. Will you tell me why? - Maybe. If the reason is something simple like not enough information or lack of response, probably. Our members' safety comes first though, so we may choose not to share if we think it will put them in danger or subject them to harassment.
- If I get denied can I reapply? - Maybe. We ask that you message us first though.

This helps us verify that you're a real person, you're really you, and that you're the cool person we all know you are! Older accounts with more history are more helpful as they really help us get a sense of 'you.' This is another check we use to make sure we're doing our best to weed out trolls, scammers, spammers, and AI. You don't have to share all... or any, really... but this makes our job a lot easier. We may reach out to you on the other accounts if we're not sure you're the you that applied; if we do, please reply so we know you're not being impersonated!

This is totally optional too; if you have an established fedi presence then you don't really need to do this unless you want to.
